Forums – Unfortunately this failed – In a response to be able list items for sale within the club there is going to be a trial of using web based forums. There will be three forms, 1 – for sale items, 2 – give away or swap items, 3 – an Advice and Help Centre. These will be accessible through the member area login, under the index item Forum. Please remember because we do not have a full login membership system, each bowser of these forums has full access to update and amend the entries.
The links to these pages must not be published or emailed to others outside of the club as they are intended for club members only.
Social Media – WhatsApp
It is important that the Social media is used in a way to support different events, by only posting relevant material and by joining only those groups that you want to receive notifications from.
An example of an issue that was given to me was of an individual who joined a WhatsApp group for cruising, thinking it was about cruising activities in general. However during a cruise which he did not participate in, he was inundated with messages about where to obtain petrol, obviously this was important to those cruising, but not to him. This activity may simply be resolved with separate specific cruise groups. We just need to consider how best to use these fantastic social media tools available to us all. You can mute notifications on and off see instructions below.
How to Join?
Firstly have you got WhatsApp on your *phone. You can download it through the Apple store or Android store, or through a web browser on your device – Google “WhatsApp” and the listing will offer the website and may be the optional listing of the WhatsApp download for IOS or Android.
Here are two ways to join a group:
- If you are viewing the links like below on your phone, then select the text version of the link (https://chat.whatsapp.com/Not a real link).
- If you are viewing the web or a paper copy, and your phone is separately in you hand, you can join using the #QR code.
- You can also scan with the WhatsApp camera:
- Open WhatsApp > tap Camera.
- Hold your device over the QR code to scan.
- Tap Add to Contacts.
- On iPhone 6s and newer, you can tap and hold the WhatsApp icon on your home screen to view the quick action menu. Then, tap Camera to open the WhatsApp camera.
- Scan from Photos
- Open WhatsApp > Settings.
- Tap the QR icon displayed next to your name.
- Tap Scan, then tap the Photos icon on the bottom of the screen.
- Select the WhatsApp QR code from your photos.
- Tap Add to Contacts.
In the NUSC group listings you will see an image for the group, the group name, a commentary of what the group is for, a textual version of the address and the QR code.
You can use the default camera of new Android or iPhone devices which comes equipped with QR code scanner. If your camera does not have inbuilt QR scanner, you can take help of apps like Google Lens or Barcode Scanner. Below are examples, the real links are in the members area.
* WhatsApp will work on a PC but it will want to synchronise with your phone.
#A QR code is link like a bar code on a tin of soup and it tells the phone the web address of the WhatsApp group you want to join. The QR code is a digital image of the text.
Main club communication point for the club and committee members to talk with the full membership.
Android Mute notifications – Via the Three-Dot Menu
Open the group conversation on WhatsApp and tap on the three-dot menu icon. Tap on “Mute notifications,” and then choose either “8 hours,” “1 week,” or “1 year,” depending on how long you don’t want to receive notifications. There is no way to stop them forever. Make sure that the box next to “Show notifications” is unchecked. If it’s checked, you will still receive notifications in the status bar and notifications tray, as well as LED alerts, but you will not get pop-ups or tones of any sort.
IOS Mute notifications – From the Group Info Page
Tap on the group conversation to open it up in WhatsApp, if not already done, then tap on the top part that features the name of the group chat and the numbers and contact names of everyone in it. On the following Group Info page, tap on “Mute.”
Now, you can choose to mute the group chat for “8 hours,” “1 week,” or “1 year.” There is no option to mute it forever. Whatever you decide, that’s how long you won’t receive notifications for the group chat, but you’ll still be able to read and send new messages.
